Brydges, Sir Samuel Egerton
- Brydges, Sir Samuel Egerton
(1762-1837)
Born between Canterbury and Dover, the second son of Edward Brydges, and educated at Maidstone School, Canterbury, and Queen's College, Cambridge, he was called to the bar but never practiced. He seemed to live under the delusion that he was a great writer, but his published volumes of poems failed to arouse much enthusiasm. His novels Mary de Clifford (1792) and Arthur Fitz-Albini (1798) were fairly popular. He tried unsuccessfully to get the House of Lords to establish his claim to the title Baron Chandos. He was elected member of Parliament for Maidstone in 1812 and from 1813 to 1822 was involved in running Lee Priory Press, which published rare editions of Elizabethan works. From 1818 he lived abroad. Some of his other publications are: Poems, 1807. Select Poems, 1814. Occasional Poems, 1814. Some of his poems: "Dedication to a Novel, 1799," "Elegy, from a Novel, 1802," "Human Fate," "Lines Written Immediately After Parting from a Lady," "Moral Axioms," "On Dreams, October 15, 1782," "Poets and Modern Poetry," "The Gamekeeper's Return at Night," "To Miss M-," "Verses," "Upon Ancient Mansions."
